The LWR Fair Trade Coffee Project
ensures that more of the money you spend on coffee reaches the farmers who
actually grow it. Fair trade coffee is a simple solution that means the
difference – quite literally – between surviving and not surviving for
small-scale coffee farmers.
Coffee: a bitter cup?
Coffee is big
business – it’s one of the most heavily traded commodities in the world. But
for the majority of small-scale coffee farmers, the benefits are few.
Conventionally traded
coffee involves a lengthy, and expensive, cast of middlemen between the coffee
farmer and the consumer, each taking their share – or more – of the coffee
price. What’s left for the farmers may not even cover their production costs or
basic living expenses.
Coffee prices are
notoriously unstable and in recent years have dropped to historic lows, forcing
farmers from Colombia to Tanzania to give up their farms. The unpredictable
fluctuations in market price deny many farmers the ability to pay for daily
necessities such as medicines, clothing or school fees. Overwhelmed with debt
and unable to earn a consistent income, farmers are moving to the cities or
migrating to other countries in search of work.
A simple solution: Fair Trade.
One answer for
small-scale farmers is Fair Trade. Fair Trade shares the bounty of the coffee
trade with those who grow the crop, helping them build a better future for
themselves and their communities.
By working together
and pooling their resources to form a cooperative, farmers can sell their
coffee directly to international buyers without relying on middlemen. Through
Fair Trade, farmers receive a fair price that covers their cost of production
and guarantees them a living wage for their labors.
Fair Trade far
surpasses the temporary assistance provided to farmers through charity. Instead,
the ongoing business of Fair Trade consistently contributes to the living
conditions of farmers, their families and their communities. Cooperatives use
profits from Fair Trade coffee sales in establishing community improvement
programs such as training in organic farming, leadership development, schools
and health clinics.
The LWR Fair Trade Coffee Project: your role in
Fair Trade.
Micah 6:8 calls us,
as Christians, to do justice, love mercy and walk humbly.
The LWR Coffee
Project helps Lutherans answer that call by righting the injustices faced by
small-scale farmers around the world.
The LWR Coffee
Project closes the gap between your church and the kind of communities in which
LWR works. By using Fair Trade coffee and other products in your congregations
and homes, Lutherans guarantee that farmers will earn the income they need to
feed their families, educate their children, seek medical care and improve
their communities.
THE LUTHERAN WORLD RELIEF FAIR TRADE chocolate project
Who doesn't love chocolate? Its rich,
creamy taste brings a smile to faces young and old. But for the farmers who
grow the cocoa used in making chocolate, the taste isn’t always so sweet.
A bitter harvest?
West African countries are critically
dependent on cocoa. Ninety percent of the world’s cocoa is grown by families on
small farms of 12 acres or less. In Ghana, cocoa revenues account for more than
33 percent of the country’s total export earnings.
Cocoa is one of the world’s most
traded and speculated commodities, but the vast majority of the money that
cocoa earns goes to middlemen, not to the growers. Oftentimes, farmers may be
forced to sell their harvest for less than the cost of production, or for just
slightly more, leaving little money to provide for their families.
Low
cocoa prices have meant severe poverty and even child slavery for many families
in West Africa, tainting chocolate with the bitterness of social injustice.
Fair
Trade means better lives for cocoa farmers.
In Ghana, 20,000 cocoa farmers have
united to form Kuapa Kokoo, a democratically operated cooperative that gives
them stronger representation in the cocoa market. The farmers pool their crops
to sell directly to international buyers without relying on middlemen. When the
cooperative sells its crop to Fair Trade buyers, the farmers receive a fair
price. Also, the cooperative receives a Fair Trade premium that is invested in
the farming communities – to build wells, fund schools, and provide mobile
medical clinics and other benefits.
Kuapa Kokoo has a mission to empower
farmers in their efforts to gain a dignified livelihood, to increase women’s
participation in all of Kuapa’s activities, and to develop environmentally
friendly cultivation of cocoa. The cooperative also owns part of Divine
Chocolate, formerly the Day Chocolate Company, which turns their cocoa crop
into Divine brand chocolate bars. This means the farmers are directly involved
in business decisions made about their cocoa and they’ll share in any of the
company’s profits. Divine Chocolate is the first farmer-owned chocolate company
in the world.
The inspiration for
Divine started from Kuapa Kokoo: in 1993 the cooperative members resolved to
make a Fair Trade chocolate bar of their own. Kuapa partnered with Twin
Trading, The Body Shop, Christian Aid and Comic Relief to form the Day
Chocolate Company in 1998 to distribute Divine chocolate in the United
Kingdom.
After many years of
success with Divine, Day changed their name to Divine Chocolate. In 2006,
Divine Chocolate was established in the United States by Kuapa Kokoo, Lutheran
World Relief, Divine Chocolate (UK), Oikocredit, and SERRV International.
